Ring Resizing

Turnaround depends on the complexity of the job.

Most straightforward resizing projects are done within a couple of days or even same day!

Rings with more involved settings — like pavé or channel-set stones — may take a bit longer.

During your consultation, we'll give you a more accurate timeframe for your specific piece.

When done correctly, most resizing projects shouldn't leave any visible marks on your ring’s band. Our goldsmith polishes and finishes the ring after sizing, so the work area blends in with the rest of the band.

With this in mind, some rings are made out of unique alloy mixes that may be hard to replicate or source.

In these circumstances, there may be a faint line present at the point of incision, where the ring was resized.

Prior to resizing your ring, we’ll let you know exactly what to expect.

We can resize rings made out of gold, platinum, and silver.

We don’t resize rings made out of tungsten or titanium since they’re designed not to be cut.

Most setting styles can be sized. That said, there are exceptions to this.

One example is an eternity band, where stones are set continuously around the ring’s band - as seen in Pave style rings. With these designs, creating an incision along the band to resize it can be complex, since we need to preserve the integrity of the setting and ensure the stones remain secure. With styles like these, resizing can be extremely difficult, if not impossible altogether.

Another example is cases where the ring’s band plays a crucial role in the setting itself, like with tension set rings. In these designs, altering the ring’s circumference affects the hold, or pressure, that secures the stone in place. By resizing these types of rings, the setting can become impossible altogether.

We generally advise limiting resizing to one to two sizes in either direction to make sure the ring keeps its structural integrity, but this is also very dependent on the characteristics of your ring. So bring it in, and let us give you personalized advice

Whether you’re resizing a ring up or down, it all begins with an incision in the band.

Sizing Up
To make a ring larger, we cut the band, add a small piece of matching metal, and solder it in place. We then shape, smooth, and polish the ring so it looks exactly as it did before.

Sizing Down
To make a ring smaller, we make two incisions in the band to remove the section between each. This makes the circumference shorter; we then reconnect the two ends and polish the seam. For slight size increases, sometimes we can make the ring bigger by gently stretching it or shaving down the inside of the band.

The goal is for the finished ring to look and feel like nothing was ever changed.
