Jewelry Soldering

Soldering uses heat and a filler metal, called “solder, to fuse broken pieces back together.

During the process, we heat the solder with a torch until it turns molten, then apply it right to the break.

The melted solder flows into the gap and, when it cools, it hardens into a strong, lasting bond, that fuses the broken pieces together.

From here, we then polish and finish the joined spot so the repair blends into the rest of the piece for a flawless finish.

Once it's done, you'd never know it was broken!

We can solder jewelry pieces made out of gold, silver, and platinum.

We can't solder plated base metals, stainless steel, tungsten, or other non-precious metals.

With this in mind, a factor that really determines the success of soldering is the actual nature of the break.

A clean break is usually a straightforward fix. When the two ends line up neatly, there's a clean joint for the solder to “grab” onto when melted, and that makes for a strong bond.

A messier break is a bit more complicated. Irregular breaks don't always leave enough surface for the solder to hold well, so in those cases we may need to add solid metal to the piece to rebuild the joint before we can complete the repair.

Please keep in mind that there are unfortunately scenarios where soldering is not possible, and your piece may be beyond repair. That being said, there’s another route: redesigning it into something new.

Taking a broken but meaningful piece and reworking it into a fresh form is a great way to hold onto the piece’s sentiment for years to come.

Soldering involves heat, and some stones don't handle heat well. With that in mind, your stones are absolutely safe while under our careIf a stone is at risk, we'll remove it before the work and reset it after, or use a method that keeps the heat away from it. Protecting your piece always comes first.

Most straightforward jobs — a chain repair or a simple band solder — are done within a few days. Soldering a ring set, or work that also needs stone removal or extra repairs, can take a little longer.

For each soldering project, we take measures to ensure that the hue of the solder closely matches the original metal. Once the joint has bonded, we polish and finish the area so it blends into the rest of the piece. In most cases, the repair is seamless. During your consultation, we’ll let you know what to expect.
